For an inspiring and delightful story about Mrs. Culp's life, click on this link from the Dayton Daily News Dottie Culp's Life Celebrated. While you are reflecting, please read again the wonderful interview with Mrs. Culp written by Dan Wolfe, FHS '65, on our "Faculty and Staff' page. Many of us remember Mrs. Culp from Fairview not only as a teacher and counselor but as an ideal role model and friend. She was unwavering with her smile, support and wisdom. She helped create the feeling of family at Fairview and we will never forget her. Thank you Mrs. Culp for being such an important part of our lives. |

OTHER RECENT OBITUARIES Kathi Smith died in 2006. We received notification from her brother, Steve, in September 2011 that Kathi had passed away in 2006 of a cancer of unknown origin. Steve is from the FHS Class of 1965. Kathi was living in Nashville and has a daughter named Kristin. Kathi will be greatly missed. Our sincere sympathy to her family. We know that five of our 1966 classmates died in 2009. Kerry Thompson, Jim Holland, Carol "Suzi" Stidham, Mike Bowers and Nancy Marker Steinert. For more information about these classmates, please scroll down the page. There is a specail tribute to Nancy Marker Steinert on the "Remember Nancy" page.
A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO JIM BO CALLISON News of the passing of Jim Callison is shocking and sad to me. I did not know Bo Callison as a friend at FHS but knew of him as a great guy, a gentleman and a person liked and respected by all. Bo played in my Babe Ruth baseball league and I vividly recall the time I faced him in a game he was pitching. All the time I was at the plate the Umpire behind me kept up a running commentary about how great each pitch was and what a super pitcher Bo was. It was somewhat unnerving to me.Bo was throwing some real "heat" that day (fast pitches), one of which I watched go by as a called strike. The next pitch was a great big change-up that came across the plate about 2 MPH. I swung way in front of the pitch, looking like a rookie in the process. The Umpire's comment was, "and he's smart, too". After the next pitch, I got a chance to go back to the dugout, humiliated and defeated by Jimbo Callison. He did a number on me that day; it was a textbook example of how a good pitcher handles a batter and I will always have a clear but painful memory of our matchup. I never got another chance to bat against Bo, which is probably lucky for me. I hate to see a man like that pass away from us. MEMORIES ABOUT JIM CALLISON This is taken from a note Milt wrote to his own children about their Uncle Bo. Talked to Uncle Bo yesterday. He and Becky were headed to an appointment at Duke. He sounded good and has a very positive attitude. Of course, some of our conversation turned to our days at Wake Forest. Then last night I was thinking, you guys probably do not realize what a dynamic athlete your Uncle Bo was. I'll start off by saying that he was quick, fast and did not possess "white man's disease" [he could jump]. He was very,very good at all sports. In 1969, Theta Chi retired the All Campus Trophy for winning Greek intramurals three consecutive years. This was largely due to Bo Callison. In football, our QB, Kim Menke and Bo made the "Hail Mary" pass before Flutie to Phelan gave it fame [ Boston College vs. Miami, November 23, 1984]. The play was simple - Menke threw it and Bo ran, jumped and caught it. In baseball, Uncle Bo was twice named ACC ALL Conference. He was a very good hitter and outfielder. However, his most notable achievements were on the base paths. He led the ACC in stolen bases two years and in 1969 stole 33 bases. That record held up for better than a decade and then his record was only broken when they started including all games in the records. [During Uncle Bo's career, "preseason" games were not included.] Your mom once told me that he taught Mike Schmidt how to slide. Maybe that helped Schmidt slide into the Hall of Fame. |

MICHAEL BOWERS Dr. Michael Bowers O.D., passed away on Monday August 4, 2008 at age 60 amongst family and friends in Englewood, Ohio. He had battled brain cancer since late 2007. Mike or "Doc" as he was affectionately referred to by his patients was a popular and well respected optometrist in Englewood since 1974. He was a graduate of Ohio State University, completed his studies at Ohio University and went on to teach as a clinical instructor at the Ohio State School of Optometry from 1972-1974. Mike served as Mayor of Englewood from 1998 until his death. He was always serving the community in some capacity. City Council, Vice Mayor, City Planning Commission, The Jaycees, "Pit Dad" for Northmont Band Boosters, member of the Concord United Methodist Church were some of the affiliations he served. Mike served as our senior class Sgt.-at-Arms and a friend to many who still carry very fond memories of him. It was said that Mike wanted to have as many friends as possible by the time he died and it seems he achieved that goal. His childhood and high school friends have only wonderful things to say about Mike and the loyalty of his optometry patients supports those feelings. He easily shared his genuine, warm, caring personality and sense of humor. He was an excellent example of how to live life. He will be missed.

RON FRYDMAN In late May 2001 Ron lost his battle with cancer. He would beat back this terrible disease time after time for several years and had a wonderful positive attitude that inspired everyone who knew him. Many of us who attended Fairview Elementary had known Ronnie since we were five years old. He served in the military and went to college after graduating from Fairview, ultimately finding his family's commercial real estate business to be his calling. Those of us who stayed in touch with him saw a mature, talented and fun friend emerge in adulthood. |

CANDACE GOLDFLIES Candy Goldflies passed away in September 1999 after a courageous year and a half battle with lymphoma. Many of us remember Candy well from her high school successes as well as her later business success in Dayton and, later, in Colorado. We also remember her as a loyal friend who attended reunions with great enthusiasm. Her devotion to her family, including her brother Gary, was legend. Candy was laid to rest in Dayton, Ohio. |

RANDY HALE As far as we know, Randy was the first member of our class to pass away long before our first (10-year) reunion in 1976. Randy attended Fairview Elementary School, as did many of us, so he was someone we had known most of our lives. He had married Kathy Anderson (FHS '67) and they had a child, Traci who is now well known in the Dayton area as Traci Hale Brown. Randy would be very proud of her. |

We had our first class reunion later that year and he was just the second member of our class to die (as far as we know). Ray attended Loos Elementary School. He was divorced at the time of his death, but very proud of his daughter, Kim, a result of his marriage to Linda Welty. |

GEORGE KOKENAKIS George was a popular member of our class who died in 1991 of an illness. When our classmates were notified of his death, it was found that he was one of those people that everyone remembered and they remembered him fondly. He had entertained all of us at our 10-year reunion, just as he had done in high school. George became a hair stylist and opened a very popular shop in Dayton. At the time of his death he left to mourn his mother Eva. |

Nancy had the loving care of family and friends with her during her long ordeal and during that time she showed all of us how to have strength and courage during difficult times. She kept loving us, kept caring about us and kept laughing. She wanted to be able to walk until the end and walk she did. Nancy was happy when she could gather us together and she even continued do that. Dave passed away at home in Las Vegas on June 9, 2002. Survived by his wife, Peggy; children Jenny, Mindy, Nicole and Doug; his mother, grandmother, sister Debi (FHS '67) and brother, Dan. The loss of Dave was a painful one, especially for the remaining "four musketeers", Larry Grossnickle and Dan Hecker. Dave, like his buddy Phil Tudor, was a reunion enthusiast. He was glad to see everyone and so many were thrilled to have him there. |
||
DOUG PUTERBAUGH While plans were being made for the reunion held in 2001, Nancy Marker was contacted by Doug's wife. She notified Nancy that Doug had died suddenly and unexpectedly in the summer of 1999. Apparently Doug had some heart problems and procedures in the past, but had been feeling and doing well. He was conscientious about following his doctor's orders and expected to be fine. However, while watching a movie from his favorite easy chair at his home, Doug passed away quietly and peacefully while his wife was out of the room. Most of us remember Doug and join his family in missing him. |
||
MIKE ROBINSON Mike died of an illness, about which most of us were unaware until quite some time later. We learned of his death during our 20-year reunion in 1986. Mike is remembered as a quiet and nice guy in school and we hope someone who can tell us more about his short life will contact us in order for us to put together a fitting memorial for him. |
||
STEVE SPURGEON Shortly after our reunion in 2001, Steve's obituary appeared in the Dayton paper. He had been in touch with Nancy periodically over the years and never mentioned any health problems, so his cause of death is not known. Hopefully someone will give us information about Steve and we can write more to be included here. |

Phil had three best buddies (the Four Musketeers) from our class: Larry Grossnickle, Dave Oakes and Dan Hecker. Our reunion in August 2001 was our first without him and he was greatly missed.
